It seems I’ve switched from Sprint PCS to AT&T Wireless at the wrong time. The merger of Cingular and AT&T Wireless created a complex mess of customer service problems.

Clueless staff, dozens of phone numbers to call, and missing notes from previous calls were annoying, but a gauntlet that I could navigate. Now the technology problems have started to appear. This week I received seven voicemails ranging back two weeks. Most were important messages from friends requesting a call back. Yesterday, I received three text messages ranging from 12 to 30 hours old. Call reliability is one thing, but voicemails and text messages are equally important. All are instantaneous forms of communication that we’ve come to rely on and the service is verging on ridiculously bad. How quickly will Cingular fix these problems? When is it time to call it quits?
